Danish football stars Morten Hjulmand and Victor Froholdt, rivals in Portugal’s top league, are now competing for Denmark’s prestigious “Player of the Year 2025” award.
The two midfielders represent opposing title contenders in Portugal, with Hjulmand captaining Sporting CP and Froholdt playing for FC Porto.
Their nominations were announced by the Danish Football Association in conjunction with the national professional footballers’ association.
They join Marseille’s 30-year-old midfielder, Hojbjerg, as the three finalists for the honor.
Hjulmand, aged 26, is seeking to win the award for the second consecutive year, having first claimed the title in 2024.
The Danish federation highlighted his impactful 2025 season, which saw him lead Sporting to both a league championship and a cup victory.
“In 2025, he had a league and cup celebration with Sporting. Morten Hjulmand was a leader who lifted the trophies. Again, this year, the national team warrior is nominated for Footballer of the Year – an award he won last year for the first time in his career,” stated the federation and players’ association.
Froholdt’s nomination marks his first for the “Player of the Year” award, reflecting a year of significant progression in his career.
His 2025 season included a notable “evolution” in the league with FC Copenhagen, his debut for their main team, and a subsequent transfer to FC Porto.
“2025 marks the year Victor Froholdt entered the Danish football scene. It ends up also being the year he is nominated for the first time for Footballer of the Year,” the associations noted.
