Dani Sordo wants more victories in Sardinia

Sardinia is the setting where Dani Sordo has visited the highest step of the podium the most times. There he triumphed in 2019 and 2020, and has also added another three ‘drawers’. And this weekend he wants to shower with champagne again and bathe in the Mediterranean as dictated by the tradition of the Italian appointment. Also competing on the island is Sebastien Ogier, while Kalle Rovanpera will have to defend his leadership.

Based in Olbia, the Rally of Italy is one of the most complicated and tough gravel. Its narrow and fast sections, full of slopes and ‘blind’ curves, are usually a complicated test for drivers and mechanics. The Monte Lerno special, with almost 50 kilometres, will be the icing on the cake.

“Sardinia offers a different challenge to previous gravel events this year”, explains Sordo, “since the roads are narrower, sandier and more slippery. Because of this, you cannot afford to make mistakes. If you do, you will pay. Road position can be very important, as starting later in the order generally leaves you with a cleaner stage than those in front. The Monte Lerno stage will be a real challenge. We had a 37km one in Portugal and it was hard enough to stay fully focused the whole time. Our minimum goal for the weekend is to finish on the podium and hopefully we can be in a position to fight for victory”.

The starting position should be an ally of the Cantabrian, who will start the first stage in a delayed position, but rain forecasts could undo that advantage. Rains that will favor the man who opens the track, Rovanpera, although the champion and leader of the World Cup will have a large competition. From his teammates Ogier and Elfyn Evans, to Ott Tanak, not forgetting Sordo’s Hyundai teammates Thierry Neuville and Esapekka Lappi.
