Brazilian soccer player Dani Alves was arrested on Friday after being accused of an alleged sexual assault on a woman in Spain and a judge denied the former Barcelona defender free on bail.
The alleged incident occurred on December 31 at a Barcelona nightclub, police told The Associated Press.
Alves was arrested after responding to police requests. The state attorney’s office asked that he be held without bail and a judge attack him on charges of sexual assault after several hours of testimony.
In Spain, the crime of sexual assault ranges from unsolicited or unwanted touching of a sexual nature to rape. Police could not provide further details about the case.
The player denies the allegations last week in a video he sent to Spanish television station Antena 3. Although he acknowledged that he went dancing at the club the night of the alleged sexual assault, he assured that he did not know the woman and was always “respectful.” ” of others.
