This isn’t just a regular bug fix. WhatsApp recently shared details about this security hole. It was patched in the newest versions of iOS and macOS, but not before hackers took advantage of it. So, updating your Apple device should be your top priority.
A Sneaky WhatsApp Attack
The specific flaw in WhatsApp for iOS and Mac is called CVE-2025-55177. This bug worked with another weakness in Apple’s operating systems, known as CVE-2025-43300. Apple quickly fixed these issues on August 20. The updates came as iOS 18.6.2 and macOS Sequoia 15.6.1.
Apple itself called these attacks “extremely sophisticated.” They targeted only specific people. Donncha Ó Cearbhaill, who leads the Security Lab at Amnesty International, described it as a well-planned spyware campaign. This attack was active since late May.
What makes this especially concerning is that it was a “zero-click” exploit. This means victims didn’t need to do anything. They didn’t have to click a link or open a suspicious file. Just receiving an infected image was enough to put their device at risk. This allowed the attackers to sneak malicious code onto the device. From there, they could steal personal information, including private messages. WhatsApp sent out fewer than 200 alerts to users who were affected. The company did not share who was behind these attacks or what spyware was used.
Protecting Your Data
Sadly, this kind of attack isn’t new for WhatsApp. The platform has been targeted before by governments using spyware. They often aim for journalists and human rights activists. Amnesty International continues to warn that these threats are real and constant.
So, what should you do? Update your devices right away to the latest operating systems. Also, turn on any extra security features your device offers. On iPhones, this might be “Isolation Mode.” Android users can look for “Advanced Protection.” These steps add another layer of defense against such clever attacks. Stay safe out there, folks.
