Dan Houser Steps Aside: No GTA VI Story Role After Extensive Work

The buzz around Grand Theft Auto VI is almost deafening. Fans are eagerly counting down the days until they can dive into Rockstar’s next big adventure. But as excitement builds, one key creative voice from the series’ past won’t be lending his talents to the script this time around.

Characters from Grand Theft Auto VI

Dan Houser, a co-founder of Rockstar Games and the former head writer for the Grand Theft Auto series, confirmed he played no part in writing the upcoming game. This news comes from an IGN interview at the recent LA Comic Con. Houser officially left Rockstar in 2022 to start his own company, Absurd Ventures. His history with the crime saga runs deep, having overseen the scripts from GTA London 1969 all the way through GTA V in 2013.

“New stories are always happening, and they won’t be ones I wrote or developed,” Houser told IGN. “But I also think it must be very exciting. I have every confidence the game will turn out great.” It sounds like he’s passing the torch with a hopeful outlook.

When asked if playing a GTA game he knew nothing about would feel strange, Houser took a long breath. He simply replied, “In that way, yes.” It seems a part of him will always connect to the series. “It was a great honor to work on something so big,” he reflected. “I wrote more than 10 or 11 [GTA] titles, and I think the world has probably had enough GTA from me already.” It’s a humble, yet telling, statement from a man who shaped an entire genre.

Grand Theft Auto VI is set to hit stores on May 26, 2026. It will be available for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
