Dallas Cowboys Player Marshawn Kneeland Sent Goodbye Texts Before Suicide

Dispatch audio has revealed the tragic final moments of Dallas Cowboys defensive end Marshawn Kneeland, who died at age 24. Reports indicate Kneeland sent a group text message to his family “saying goodbye” before his death.

Details from 911 dispatch audio, obtained on Thursday, November 6, paint a grim picture. A 911 operator stated, “We’re speaking with his girlfriend. She’s trying to call his agent. We are trying to get him to call first.”

Kneeland’s girlfriend, Catalina, told authorities that he had a “history of mental illness.” Police initiated a search using dogs, drones, and other resources. An officer was heard on dispatch audio instructing, “Everybody stay with a partner. Don’t go searching by yourself.”

The Frisco Police Department confirmed Kneeland was found dead by suicide following a pursuit. Authorities reported he lost control of his vehicle and then fled on foot. His body was discovered at 1:31 a.m. after an extensive search. The Collin County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the official cause and manner of death.

The Dallas Cowboys announced Kneeland’s death on Thursday morning. “With profound sadness, the Dallas Cowboys communicate that Marshawn Kneeland tragically passed away this morning,” the team stated. “Marshawn was a beloved teammate and a valuable member of our organization. Our thoughts and prayers are with his girlfriend Catalina and his family.”

Kneeland’s agent, Jonathan Perzley, also issued a statement. “It pains me deeply to confirm that my client and dear friend Marshawn Kneeland passed away last night,” Perzley said. He described watching Kneeland develop from a hopeful young man at Western Michigan University into a respected professional.

Perzley added, “Marshawn gave his all in every play, every practice, and in every moment on the field. To lose someone with his talent, spirit, and kindness is a pain I can barely express in words.” He requested privacy and compassion for Kneeland’s loved ones during this difficult time.

The NFL expressed its deep sorrow regarding the tragic news. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his girlfriend Catalina, his family, friends, and teammates,” the league stated. The NFL has contacted the Cowboys and offered support and counseling resources.

Kneeland was a second-round pick by the Cowboys in the 2024 NFL Draft after a standout collegiate career at Western Michigan University. In 18 career games, he recorded 26 tackles, four quarterback hits, and one sack. Just days before his death, Kneeland scored his first NFL touchdown on Monday, November 3, recovering a blocked punt against the Arizona Cardinals.
