Daniel Sanders was the winner of the first stage of the Dakar on motorcycles in a day in which Sam Sunderland, current champion, had to leave after a heavy fall in an area with stones. Quintanilla and Brabec were second and third. Barreda finished fourth and ranks the same overall after a one-minute penalty.

Carlos Sainz won the first stage in cars after recovering from a puncture at the start of the special and is the leader of the general classification. Loeb was second and Ekstrom third.
