Dacal, the only Spanish medalist in the Olympic Games in Munich ’72, dies

The Asturian boxer Enrique Rodríguez Cal “Dacal”, winner of the only medal achieved by Spain in the Olympic Games in Munich 1972, died this Wednesday in Avilés victim of ALSthe disease against which he has fought in recent months, as reported to EFE by family sources.

Dacal, 71, was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) earlier this year, in which he still took part in some popular race, although the rapid advance of the disease soon prevented him from continuing to practice sports.

Recognitions for the charismatic “Dacalín”, as the boxer was popularly known, have taken place in recent months, including institutional ones from the Avilés City Council by baptizing with his name in the La Toba sports center, in front of which he has placed a bust of the athlete, or of the Carreño town hall, in his native Candás, which permanently exhibits the Olympic bronze medal in the “La Baragaña” Multipurpose Center.
