Wellington: The death toll from the devastating Cyclone Gabriel in New Zealand has reached 8 while many people are injured.

Hurricane Gabriel’s intensity has eased slightly, but bodies and injured are still being found during rescue operations.

Military helicopters moved the citizens trapped on the roofs of the houses to a safe place. Yesterday, during the rescue operations, 4 bodies were recovered from the roofs while two more bodies were found, one of which is that of an infant.

The cyclone wreaked havoc in the country of 5.1 million people. Ten and a half thousand people became homeless while property was also damaged.

The Prime Minister of New Zealand expressed his condolences to the families of those killed in the hurricane, saying that the nation has not seen such a devastating storm in generations.
