Cyclist Heidi Franz Suffers Cerebral Contusion After Motorcycle Collision in Almería Race Incident

The safety of cyclists has once again become a topic of discussion after Heidi Franz’s unfortunate accident in the classic of Almería. The American cyclist was hit by a motorcycle from the organization during the race, sparking concern and debates about the coexistence of cyclists and vehicles in competitions.

## The debate on career security
According to reports, the incident occurred in a section of the test where motorcycles are typically present to ensure coverage of the race. However, the impact forced Franz out of competition. It’s worth noting that Franz has already started training with the United States National Team and hopes to return to Extremadura, where she currently resides, in March.

In her statement, Franz expressed her gratitude for the variables that, although causing the fall, also prevented a potentially worse outcome. She recounted the incident, “After a fall with a racing motorcycle took me out of the Classic from Almería, with a blow to the head, I consider myself very fortunate.” Franz explained that she was trying to avoid crashes in the middle of the platoon by moving to the left traffic lane, which was congested due to construction. As she approached the gravel, she thought she was safe, but then a racing motorcycle, which looked more like a GP motorcycle than a traffic safety motorcycle, hit her from behind.

## Incident Details
The impact sent Franz to the ground on her right side, just 3 km from the first climb of the day and when the race was about to really start. Franz questioned the motorcycle driver’s decision to advance at that precise moment, while the runners were on the floor and avoiding falls. It seems unlikely that the driver will receive any disciplinary action from the UCI for their actions. Franz also expressed relief that the driver crashed and stopped, reducing the impact of the collision. Interestingly, the president of the UCI jury attempted to tell Franz that he did not remember the incident correctly, but that’s an issue she hopes will be addressed later.

Heidi Franz’s accident serves as a stark reminder of the risks cyclists face in competitions. As the debate on career security continues, it’s essential to consider the safety measures in place and how they can be improved to prevent such incidents in the future. With cyclists and vehicles sharing the same space, it’s crucial to ensure that both parties can coexist safely. The incident has sparked a necessary conversation, and it will be interesting to see how the cycling community responds and works towards creating a safer environment for all competitors.
