Customs Seize $50,000 in Undeclared Cash at Fray Bentos Border Crossing

A woman and her companion, driving a Peugeot from Argentina, crossed into town on the General San Martín bridge. Customs officials stopped them.

The woman had a large sum of US cash – $50,000. She didn’t declare it.

What happened next

You can bring up to $10,000 into the country without declaring it. More than that, you need to fill out a sworn statement. You have to say where the money came from and why you’re moving it.

Customs found the cash in a white bag inside a box of personal items. They told the prosecutor, who then seized the money and the car. The two people were arrested, but then let go. They’re still in trouble, though.

Details of the case

The authorities are still looking into the matter. They want to know more about the money and why it was hidden. The woman and her companion could face more serious consequences if they don’t cooperate.
