Cuba attends to more than 250 Haitian migrants in the center of the island

Cuba atiende a más de 250 migrantes haitianos recalados en centro de la isla

A total of 253 Haitian migrants are cared for by local authorities and the Red Cross after their boat – bound for the US – stopped in the central province of Ciego de Ávila due to the "bad weather"Official media reported this Tuesday.

According to local press reports, Haitians are in good health and are temporarily housed in a school, place to which provincial government officials traveled. Of the total number of people treated, 31 are minors, according to the Invasor newspaper.

The island’s official media assured that "Contact was established with the highest Cuban authorities to ensure the organized, safe and voluntary return to the country of origin" of the migrants.

This is the second time this year that a group of Haitians arrived in Ciego de Ávila after his boat was diverted en route to the United States.

Last February, 292 migrants from that country, including 56 minors, who were sailing on a "precarious boat"they landed on the Cuban island of Cayo Paredón.

On that occasion, the official Cubadebate media reported that the boat was in the water for five days and that "They must have sailed about 400 miles, until they ended up landing on the coast of Ciego de Avila".
