Crypto game similar to Call of Duty in development

Video games, like many other things in the world, are experiencing a revolution fueled by crypto and blockchain. Until now, “blockchain games” have actually been niche, but in the future all games should have blockchain aspects. Fortnite developer Epic Games is early and has announced the shooting game Shrapnel.

New shooting game includes crypto and NFTs

You can find the game on the Epic Games Store; at least the announcement of it. You can’t download it yet, but you can in the first quarter of 2024 if you have a Windows PC. The style is very similar to Call of Duty, it is extensive and realistic.

Shrapnel was developed by Neon Machine, which raised $20 million in funding for the game in October. The funding round was led by Polychain Capital, which specifically focuses on blockchain gaming.

Of course, Neon Machine has integrated blockchain aspects into the Unreal Engine 5 game. Every aspect of the game, “from the characters and weapons to game locations,” can be personalized using non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Additionally, the game will use its own cryptocurrency called SHRAP.

This is an ERC-20 token on the Avalanche network. As of April 29, 2023, 3 billion SHRAP tokens have been created, but not much more is known about tokenomics. The early access version called Schrapnel Training Exercises One (STX1) is now available on the Epic Games Store. Nothing has been revealed about the price or system requirements yet.

Epic is betting big on blockchain gaming

It is not the first game from Epic Games to feature blockchain aspects. For example, in mid-2022, the company launched the battle royale shooter game GRIT together with Gala Games, where you can buy characters and weapons in the form of NFTs. Even Fortnite now contains NFTs.

Another equally ambitious blockchain game is Star Atlas, which is very similar to games like EVE and Star Citizen. This game features a fully decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) that is used to govern society in the game. There is also an in-game marketplace, with two cryptocurrencies playing a central role.
