Crucial Giedraitis for Baskonia

The green and black led the game for 29 minutes thanks to the points from their pivots and the streaks of success from Kyle Guy in the triple, but against the best Baskonista version in the last quarter they did not have a cool head to achieve the victory.

Joventut began the match with the clearest ideas, with Tomic beating Kotsar near the basket and, together with Brodziansky, leading the green-and-blacks to a comfortable 14-5 (min. 5).

Birgander kept up with Tomic’s scoring pace when he took over from the Croatian to take La Penya to what would be their biggest advantage in the first half (23-11, min. 7). The green and black interiors scored 18 of their team’s first 23 points.

Joan Peñarroya put Howard and Castello on the court to change the face of his team and the game began to equalize until a tie (33-33) just under four minutes from the break.

Howard went up to 12 points in the first half, but erred on individualism in some decisions, which prevented his team from taking the lead for the first time in the game.

Joventut did not lose their composure when Baskonia played their best and took breath with two three-pointers from Vives and Parra (41-37, min.18) and a solid defense under their basket. The visitors faltered again in attack and the locals extended their advantage from the free kick to go six up at halftime (45-39).

Thompson made himself known in the Baskonia game at the start of the third period with six points, but Guy responded with two three-pointers to put La Penya up seven (53-46, min. 25).

The Baskonistas reacted thanks to Giedraitis -11 points in the third quarter- and Costello to get their first lead in the entire game (60-62, min. 29) after adding a 7-16 run.

The Lithuanian forward from Baskonia signed an excellent third quarter with two free throws that allowed the team from Vitoria to reach the final quarter ahead (63-64).

The best version of Markus Howard returned in the last one, who understood that not everything is shooting three-pointers and took out his repertoire of plays near the basket to stretch the Baskonista advantage to ten points (70-80, min. 37).

Joventut clung to the game despite not being successful from the triple and Tomic suffered from Kotsar’s defense. A 7-0 run kept him with options (77-80) at 1:20 from the end.

Giedraitis put an end to the green-black resistance with a three-pointer with one minute and four seconds to go before the duel ended and La Penya did not have a cool head to play that last minute.
