The United States has recorded 1,488 deaths and 187,392 infected with the novel coronavirus in the past 24 hours, according to the independent count from Johns Hopkins University.
The country now has 18,942,524 cases and 331,740 deaths from covid-19 since the start of the pandemic.
New York State remains the hardest hit by the pandemic with 37,286 deaths, followed by Texas with 26,911.
The provisional death toll far exceeds the lower of the White House’s initial estimates.
The covid-19 pandemic has caused at least 1,750,780 deaths resulting from more than 79.7 million cases of infection worldwide.
The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected at the end of December 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China.
