Covid-19: the European Union offers “donations of vaccines” to China

An outstretched hand. The European Union has offered China, faced with an explosion of contaminations, to offer it anti-Covid vaccines “suitable for variants” and bring him his “expertise”, announced the European Commission on Tuesday January 3, before a new meeting of health experts from the Twenty-Seven. The Commissioner for Health, Stella Kyriakides, “contacted his Chinese counterparts to offer them solidarity and support from the EU”, detailed a spokesperson for the Commission, adding that Brussels was waiting for Beijing’s response.

The European executive had already announced in mid-December that the EU was ready to “supply China with vaccines”, but not to mention donations. The Commission did not detail how many doses the EU could offer, or what stocks the vaccines would be drawn from. But the EU executive stressed that the exact nature of EU aid would depend on the Chinese response.

End of “zero Covid”

Beijing ended its draconian “zero Covid” policy in early December, leading to the explosion of contamination in the country, and will lift its quarantine obligations for travelers arriving from abroad on Sunday. Worried about the lack of transparency on Chinese figures and fearing the appearance of new variants, a dozen states, including several in the EU (France, Italy, Spain), are now imposing Covid tests on passengers from China.

During a meeting of a committee bringing together health experts from the Twenty-Seven, a “overwhelming majority” EU countries also spoke out on Tuesday in favor of systematic Covid tests for travelers coming from China before they leave for Europe, according to a spokesperson for the European Commission. The measure is now to be discussed on Wednesday at a meeting intended to develop a coordinated EU response to the explosion of contamination in China.
