Losing hurts. Especially when you’re a club like Real Madrid and the scoreboard shows a heavy defeat. But sometimes, as goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois sees it, a tough loss can be a much-needed wake-up call. He described their recent thrashing by Paris Saint-Germain as a “slap.” He believes it might actually be good for them. This game knocked the Spanish giants out of the Club World Cup. It started badly with PSG scoring two quick goals. Courtois admits those early strikes sealed their fate.
“They always come out strong,” the Belgian international explained. “We just didn’t stick to what the coach wanted.” He felt his team lacked the will to play. PSG’s aggressive pressing made it easy for them to find open players, especially in the first half. Things got a little better in the second half when PSG eased off their pressure. But the damage was done. “Those two goals right at the start pretty much decided the game,” Courtois noted.
It was a hard pill to swallow, no doubt about it. Yet, Courtois saw the bigger picture. “It’s a difficult loss, but it’s a loss we can learn from,” he said. He believes moments like these are crucial. “Sometimes taking a hit like this is good. It helps us keep fixing things. It pushes us to get better.” For Courtois, this painful exit from the tournament isn’t just an end. It’s a harsh lesson for the road ahead.
