Cortina looks out on Engelhardt’s victory

The 37th edition of the Vuelta a Castilla y León began with an unexpected protagonist. The German Felix Engelhardt (22 years old) won the first stage in a reduced sprint of four riders that played for victory in Soria. There he was fighting, until the last meters, a Iván García Cortina who finished in a creditable fourth position after resisting on the final slope that led to the finish line. That being the case, the Jayco runner took over the second professional win of his record, both achieved this year, to gain a lead that he will have to defend this Thursday in a demanding mountain stage through the Sierra del Guadarrama.

The first stage of the round in Leon had the expected script, with an early escape, a hasty neutralization and a sprint. For much of the day, Jeremy Cabot (Total Energies) he rode solo at the head of the race, but before reaching the explosive climb of Castillo de Soria, which had an average of over 8%, he was neutralized by the peloton. Despite the fact that there were some cuts, no one managed to open a gap, so the slope that preceded the finish line dictated its sentence. Cortina clung to Fedelli’s wheel (Q36.5), Molenaar (Electro HyperEurope) and Engelhardt. The latter, after Cortina’s sprint took a long time after being the first to start, took the victory.
