Coronavirus attacks Barcelona and Real Madrid

Eleven players in Barcelona and Real Madrid were in isolation on Wednesday after contracting the coronavirus, ahead of the resumption of actions in the Spanish La Liga over the weekend.

Barça players Ousmane Dembélé, Samuel Umtiti and Gavi have the virus, the team said on Wednesday, then earlier in the week it announced the infections of Jordi Alba, Alejandro Balde, Clement Lenglet and Dani Alves.

It is a new setback for Barcelona before Sunday’s game in Mallorca, stranded in seventh place.

Real Madrid, which leads the league with an eight-point advantage, said Wednesday that Thibaut Courtois, Federico Valverde, Eduardo Camavinga and Vinicius Jr. tested positive for coronavirus, ahead of Sunday’s game against Getafe.

The League has been on hiatus for almost two weeks.

In England, the English Premier League has resisted calls to pause the season to try to curb the spread of the coronavirus, which has now led to the postponement of 16 games in less than three weeks due to a lack of healthy players.

The Arsenal manager will be absent from the Manchester City game in the New Year after testing positive for the second time, the club said on Wednesday.

Arteta’s positive result in March 2020 was a key factor in suspending the league in the first week of the pandemic.

Arteta is the third Premier coach currently in isolation after contracting coronavirus, after Parrick Vieira, from Crystal Palace; and Steven Gerrad of Aston Villa.

“Mikel is isolated according to government guidelines and we wish him well,” Arsenal said.
