Over 42 lakh deaths prevented in India due to COVID vaccination in 2021.
Highlights
- Corona vaccines saved 19 lakh lives in America.
- According to another study, 1.63 crore deaths were avoided due to vaccines.
- China was not included in this study.
Covid Vaccines: All the countries of the world were battling the epidemic spread by the corona virus till the middle of 2020. At that time everyone was eagerly waiting for the corona vaccine. Russia registered the first corona vaccine ‘Sputnik V’ in August, and after that there was a flood of vaccines. Many vaccines including Moderna, Pfizer, AstraZeneca and Covaccine have become available to combat the corona virus. Now a study has found that corona vaccines saved the lives of about 20 million people in their first year. Due to the vaccine, more than 40 lakh lives were saved in India alone.
Global Vaccination Campaign started on 8th December 2020
Oliver Watson of Imperial College, London, who led the model-based study, said that despite the continuing disparity in the supply of vaccines, large-scale deaths were prevented. According to the study, various corona vaccines saved about 20 million lives during the first year, but even more deaths could have been prevented if they had been supplied on time. The first dose was given to a retired employee in England on 8 December 2020, after which the Global Vaccination Campaign started.
42 lakh in India, 19 lakh deaths averted in America
From then till 2021, over the next 12 months, 4.3 billion people in the world took the vaccine dose. Watson said, ‘There would have been dangerous consequences if there were no vaccines. The findings show how worse the pandemic could have been had we not had these vaccines. Researchers used data from 185 countries to estimate that 42 lakh deaths from corona in India could be prevented due to the vaccine. At the same time, vaccines saved 19 lakh lives in America, 10 lakh in Brazil, 6.31 lakh in France and 5.07 lakh in Britain.
…then the death of 6 lakh people could have been prevented.
According to the study published on Thursday in the research journal ‘Lancet Infectious Diseases’, if the WHO, ie the World Health Organization, had met the target of 40 percent vaccination coverage by the end of 2021, then another 6 lakh deaths could have been prevented. According to the study, due to the vaccine, the lives of 1.98 crore people were saved. This result is based on an estimate of how many more deaths than normal occurred during this period. According to the deaths reported by Kovid-19, 1.44 crore lives were saved due to vaccines under the same model.
There was no accurate information on China, not included in the study
The London scientists did not include China in this study because there is no accurate information available about the deaths from Kovid-19 and the impact of the epidemic on its population. The study did not include aspects of how many lives were saved due to the lockdown or the rules of wearing masks. Another model-based research group estimates that 163 million deaths were averted due to vaccines.
‘We all believe the vaccine saved many lives’
The second study based on the model was conducted by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation in Seattle and is not yet published. Ali Moqdad, from the Seattle-based institute, said more people wear masks as cases rise. He said the delta wave had spread rapidly in 2021 due to the lack of a vaccine. Mokdad said, ‘We as scientists may disagree about the numbers, but we all believe that the corona vaccine saved many lives.’
