Copymecon supports decree on measures to prevent invasions

The Dominican Confederation of Micro, Small and Medium Construction Companies Inc. (Copymecon) described the presidential decree as positive on Wednesday 668-22 issued by President Luis Abinader, in which it establishes a series of measures with the objective of preventing and prosecuting invasions and irregular occupations of private and State property.

During a press conference, Elíseo Christopher, president of Copymecon, declared that on different occasions he tried to prevent illegal invasions of both private and State land and that until today there was no legal means to instruct the competent institutions to take measures with the purpose of preventing it from continuing to occur in the country.

Christopher stressed that the occupations have elements in common such as delinquency, criminality and foreigners.

In addition, he explained that this situation affects significantly and that there are people who have lost their life savings as a result of organized groups seizing those lands.

In this context, he commented that cities, neighborhoods and urbanizations in different parts of the country are growing in a disorderly manner and that wherever the invasions are, there is crime, so the cost to the State is enormous.

“That is why we support the president’s disposition and more than supporting him, we are willing to accompany him in that commission” Christopher stated.

He also stressed that small construction companies must develop their projects in an orderly manner and comply with all the legalities of the regulations governing construction.

Regarding the deportations, Cristopher said that they understand that the development of the construction sector goes hand in hand with the labor of foreigners, but that it must be regularized.

He added that the regularization of Haitians is also approved, and they agree to discuss crime, he explained that certain measures must be reviewed, but he understands that in the construction sector. If all Haitian nationals are removed from the country, the construction sector is paralyzed.

Cristopher assured that “if there were not that amount of land invasions in the Dominican Republic, the development of the country would be much more prosperous.”
