COP26: States must multiply their ambitions by 7 if they want to limit global warming to 1.5 ° C

According to the UN, global greenhouse gas emission reduction commitments should be more than seven times more ambitious to hope to limit warming to + 1.5 ° C, the highest target set by the United Nations. Paris agreement in 2015.

The new promises put forward by the States before the COP26 in Glasgow “reduce the emissions projections for 2030 by 7.5%, while 30% would be necessary for + 2 ° C and 55% for 1.5 ° C” , underlines this Tuesday, October 26, the report produced by the United Nations Environment Program and a team of researchers.

In summary, this reduction “should be four times greater to be compatible with + 2 ° C and nearly eight times greater to be compatible with + 1.5 ° C”, explains Anne Ohloff, one of the authors of the report.

Adopted by 196 delegations in 2015, the Paris Agreement set the objective of limiting global warming to less than 2 ° C compared to the pre-industrial level, and preferably below 1.5 ° C.

“We are still heading towards a climate catastrophe”

Last September, the UN already warned that the planet is heading “on a catastrophic path” of + 2.7 ° C warming. “Less than a week before the COP26 in Glasgow, we are still heading towards a climate catastrophe,” UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres regretted on Tuesday.

The COP26, which begins this Sunday, October 31 in Glasgow, will have to ensure that the objectives of the Paris Agreement are respected as much as possible, two years after the failure of the COP25 in 2019.
