Cook will stay with Apple until Bloomberg’s next major product category

In recent years, speculation about who will take over as CEO of Apple after Tim Cook has started to grow.

Cook himself, who has just completed 10 years at the helm of Apple, has just completed 10 years at the helm of Apple, confirmed that he “probably” won’t be with Apple in 10 years.

Mark Gurman of Bloomberg affirms that the belief at Apple is that cook just wants to stay “To a major new product category.”

Gurman writes that this category won’t be Apple’s car, but that Cook is especially focused on the Apple’s augmented reality glasses. Apple’s AR/VR hardware efforts will likely be Cook’s last major product category.

According to Gurman, Cook understands that running a Silicon Valley company is typically a young thing, and he won’t get much past his prime.

Gurman also reiterates that Apple is planning a mixed reality headset by 2022, but augmented reality glasses are also in development for release sometime in the “mid-decade”.

Gurman speculates that Cook will likely retire sometime between 2025 and 2028, as it also has a payment agreement that ends in 2025.

Bloomberg had already detailed Apple’s growing focus on “succession planning” in a report last year. This report explains that Apple is increasingly looking to “cultivate its next class of top managers” as Cook passes the 10-year mark as Apple’s CEO.
