Conte Laments Napoli’s Rest Disadvantage Before Sporting Champions League Tie

Antonio Conte, Napoli coach

The scoreboard against Milan read 2-1, another loss for Napoli. But for coach Antonio Conte, his focus quickly shifted to the next big challenge. Sporting Clube de Portugal waits on Wednesday in the Champions League, and Conte sees a hurdle even before kick-off. He believes his team will have less time to recover, a crucial detail in high-stakes football.

Conte praised Sporting, acknowledging their strength. “They are a good team,” he told Sport TV. “They won the championship ahead of Benfica and FC Porto. These three clubs always battle for the national title.” This shows he knows the quality they bring to the pitch.

The issue, according to Conte, comes down to the calendar. Sporting played Estoril on Saturday, clinching a 2-1 win. Napoli, however, had to travel to face Milan on Sunday. This means a full day less for physical and mental recuperation for the Italian side. It’s a small difference, but in elite competition, every hour counts.

“We need to recover physically,” Conte stated plainly. “We have one less day of rest, but we must bounce back and fight to show our best.” He understands the demand this puts on his players. The match, the second in the Champions League league phase, takes place at the historic Diego Armando Maradona Stadium. Napoli will need to dig deep, especially when facing a team Conte holds in such high regard.
