Conte crashes in Southampton

Tottenham seemed thrown towards the Champions League positions since Conte’s arrival but games like today’s play against him. Tottenham were not able to beat a Southampton who played with ten from minute 39, when Salisu, a former Valladolid player, made one of the clearest penalties that anyone has seen.

In the first half, Sotuhampton swept Tottenham. He was better than them in every way and mainly thanks to imposing an exaggeratedly high pace of play. The pressure was oppressive for a team with only two (albeit on the right foot) players in midfield. The Spurs were trying against it, but they weren’t doing too much damage. Ward-Prowse has a glove on his foot but this time he scored with a volley slap when he caught a fumble in the area. Previously, Davies had scored with a header but his illegal position was quite clear.

After the break, Tottenham improved and turned to attack. Conte opted for Doherty for the left wing, replacing a Reguilón who had seen the yellow just before the break. The visitors were really better, arriving more in quantity and clarity, but Southampton held the result. He did not do it without suffering, since they were annulled two goals in this second half. First it was Kane who scored offside and then Doherty who needed Forster to make him lose a ball already in his hands.

The standings do not deserve to be taken too seriously because Tottenham have two games less than the rivals ahead, but West Ham’s victory forces them to drop out of fifth place. Meanwhile, Southampton continues to live comfortable in the middle table and today surely happy after drawing a draw in a game that they complicated themselves.
