Congo: 35 killed in gold mine attack

Brazzaville: A deadly attack on a gold mine in the Republic of Congo has killed at least 35 people.

At least 35 people have been killed and several others injured in an attack by gunmen on a gold mine in the African nation of Congo, according to details.

The incident took place in the northeastern Congolese province of Atyrau, with local mayor Jean-Pierre Beckelisande telling the media that the dead included a four-month-old baby and a woman, a local civil society leader said. The number is 50.

He said that this is an initial number because other civilians have also been killed there, whose bodies were dumped in sleeping pits and many other civilians are also missing.

According to Bekelisande, locals were able to identify 29 bodies that were brought to the village of Pluto, while six charred bodies were buried near the mine.

The gold mine was attacked by Kodako gunmen, who looted shops, snatched gold from gold miners, and burned down local homes, said Cheroban Kokandila, a civil society leader.

A local official said the aid arrived late because of the long distance between the gold mine and the military barracks.

Fighting between government forces and rebel groups has been raging in eastern Congo for the past 20 years.
