Colombian champion

Colombia is proclaimed champion in the Caribbean Series. The Caimanes de Barranquilla, from Colombia, prevailed this Thursday with a score of 4-1 over the Gigantes del Cibao, from the Dominican Republic to conquer the crown in the Caribbean Classic for the first time in its three-year history.

Elkin Alcalá (5.2 acts), Luis Moreno (0.1), Juan Díaz (1.1) and Rodrigo Benoit (1.2) combined to throw seven-hit ball to stun a Dominican team that had outscored every team in the Series, except for the Colombians, of whom they lost their two matches.

And with the defeat of the Quisqueyans, an entire fanatic bid farewell to the Quisqueya Juan Marichal Stadium, which just the night before came close to witnessing the first perfect match in its 64-year history, after the great performance recorded by Tyler Alexander.

Alcalá pitched the first 5 2/3 innings for the winners, allowing six hits, striking out seven and walking one.

While the Colombians attacked the lefty Raúl Valdés with three laps in the second episode in which they combined five hits, which included three extravases.

After that fateful episode, the left-handed veteran tamed the Caymans as he pleased, since he did not accept liberties until they marked one in the ninth episode. Valdés finished with 8.0 innings, allowed four laps, was touched with six hits, two walks and four strikeouts. Colombia took Venezuela and the Dominican Republic, two great baseball powers, in the semifinals and final.

The crown of the Colombians stopped in two the streak of titles conquered by the Dominicans in the teams of the Toros (2020) and the Eagles (2021). For the Dominicans, Henry Urrutia batted 4-4 to be the best.
