A devastating landslide has struck a rural community in northwest Colombia, leaving a trail of destruction and death in its wake.
Heavy rainfall over several days caused the disaster in the town of Sabaneta, in the Antioquia region, where mud swept through homes, burying residents under its weight. The Colombian National Risk Management Office reports at least 5 people are dead, 3 injured, and 3 others missing.
Emergency responders, including military personnel and rescue teams, are working around the clock to search for survivors and clear the rubble. So far, 70 people have been evacuated from 23 homes and taken to temporary shelters. The Sabaneta mayor’s office has declared a state of public calamity, allowing for the mobilization of resources and implementation of emergency measures.
To ensure safety during the rescue operations, some public utilities, including electricity, have been suspended. The response efforts are ongoing, with officials racing against time to locate the missing and restore the affected area.
