This figure represents 15% of the South American country’s annual flower exports, which is also the second largest supplier in the world after the Netherlands, Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Jhenifer Mojica said in a statement.
Colombia stands out in the flower market for high-quality roses, carnations, chrysanthemums, hydrangeas and astromelias.
After coffee, flower cultivation is considered the country’s second most important agricultural export line, with more than 60 species and 1,600 flower varieties certified for sale abroad.
Valentine’s Day, which Colombians strangely celebrate in September, together with Mother’s Day in May, constitute the seasons with the largest flower sales abroad, almost 30% of the annual volume, Mojica emphasized.
The February 14 celebrations will create nearly 27,000 additional jobs to the 110,000 that power this industry, “the vast majority of women and mothers who head the household,” according to the ministry. AFP
