Colombia and Venezuela Team Up Against Elusive ElN Guerrilla Forces

Background of the Conflict

The National Liberation Army (ELN) has been a prominent terrorist group in the region, with a history spanning over 60 years. Initially, they were allies with the FARC, but their relationship deteriorated, and they became enemies. The ELN’s military capabilities are significantly stronger than those of the FARC dissidents.

Locals have reported that the ELN, also known as “elenos,” have been targeting civilians who they believe are collaborating with the FARC dissidents. These dissidents, who were once part of the FARC, have turned to criminal activities after signing the 2016 Peace Agreement.

A Joint Effort to Combat the ELN

Gustavo Petro, the President of Colombia, has suggested a joint effort with Venezuela to combat the ELN guerrillas. This comes after the ELN perpetrated a massacre, resulting in a significant loss of life and displacement of people.

The Venezuelan Minister of Defense, Vladimir Padrino, has expressed his intention to collaborate with Colombia to “consolidate peace.” In response, President Petro emphasized the need for cooperation, stating that they should work together to address the issue.

Denial of Venezuelan Involvement

The Venezuelan government has denied allegations that they are serving as a “platform” for armed groups. Despite these denials, Colombian intelligence agencies have long suspected Venezuelan involvement, and the opposition has also raised concerns.

In response to the crisis, the Venezuelan government has activated a help plan for those affected, including individuals who have crossed into Venezuelan territory seeking refuge.
