Cole tops Nola, Yankees beat Phillies 4-2

Gerrit Cole beat Aaron Nola in the duel of acesGleyber Torres rounded out a three-hit, two-RBI afternoon as the New York Yankees beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-2 on Wednesday night.

Torres also stole two bases. The Venezuelan is hitting .421 with six RBIs and five steals. Jose Trevino added a two-run homer off reliever Gregory Soto, and New York took two of three for the second straight series. National League champion Philadelphia is 1-5 – its worst start to a season since 2007.

After going six shutouts against San Francisco on opening day, Cole (2-0) held off a shutout into the seventh. He was relieved after a shot clock violation put a runner on base and scored the first run against him this season. Cole also stunned Trea Turner on first for the final out of the third.

Nola (0-1) allowed three runs and seven hits in just over six innings, walking one and striking out five. His ERA was 7.45.

For the Phillies, Panamanian Edmundo Sosa 2-0. Dominican Cristian Pache 2-0.

For the Yankees, the Venezuelans Torres 4-3, two RBIs; and Oswaldo Cabrera 3-1, one scored.
