Brian Armstrong, the CEO of Coinbase, made a bold move recently. He confirmed that using artificial intelligence tools is no longer a choice for his employees. For engineers at the crypto giant, it’s a must. If staff members can’t get on board with new technology, their place at the company is gone.
Armstrong shared his strong views on AI during an interview. He spoke on the “Cheeky Pint” podcast, hosted by John Collison, who leads Stripe. Armstrong believes AI now plays a huge role in almost every field. He feels that using AI tools to help write code should just be part of a normal day for software engineers.
Coinbase had invested in this vision. The company bought licenses for AI software like GitHub Copilot and Cursor. These tools were meant for every engineer to use. However, Armstrong noticed something unexpected. Some employees openly resisted the idea. They simply refused to use the new tools. Some managers even guessed it would take months before even half of the staff would start using AI.
Facing this resistance, Armstrong took a tough stance. Employees who wouldn’t use AI, and had no good reason for it, were let go right away. Armstrong admitted that this decision was a “severe measure.” It certainly made some staff unhappy. But he felt it sent a clear message to everyone at Coinbase. Using AI in daily work processes is not an option; it is a firm requirement.
Following these events, Coinbase ramped up its efforts. The company started serious training programs. They also began holding monthly meetings. During these sessions, different teams show off the creative ways they use AI. This helps to spread knowledge and encourage new ideas across the company.
