Well, how about that for a Saturday shocker on the tennis courts? The WTA 1000 tournament in Montreal saw a major favorite tumble out. Coco Gauff, the American star and world number two, packed her bags early.
Her undoing came at the hands of a local talent, Victoria Mboko. Mboko, just 18 years old and ranked 85th globally, pulled off the big upset. Gauff, at 21, was the top seed in this Canadian tournament. This makes Mboko’s win even more impressive.
The match itself was quick, lasting just one hour and three minutes. Mboko was clearly in control from the start. She took the first set decisively, 6-1. The second set was a bit tighter but still went her way, 6-4, securing a fantastic win.
A Young Talent Shines
This win means something extra special for Mboko. She is now the youngest player in three years to reach the Montreal quarterfinals. Guess who held that record before her? Coco Gauff herself. It almost feels like a changing of the guard on the court, doesn’t it?

So, what’s next for this young Canadian sensation? She will face Jessica Bouzas Maneiro from Spain in the next round. Maneiro is currently ranked 51st in the world. Mboko will look to keep her amazing run going.
