Coach Oliveira: We lacked serenity in emotional FC Porto defeat

Famalicão coach Hugo Oliveira said his young team’s 0-1 defeat to FC Porto stemmed from a lack of emotional control and serenity against a high-intensity opponent, despite viewing the match as a vital learning experience.

Oliveira attributed the narrow loss to a combination of FC Porto’s merit and his own side’s shortcomings, highlighting that “football is a game of emotions.” He noted FC Porto’s primary strength lay in the emotion and intensity they brought to the game.

Famalicão, he added, lacked the necessary “serenity” during moments when Porto intensified their press. The coach observed that individual players, eager to impress in big matches, felt increased pressure.

Tactically, Oliveira stated FC Porto successfully neutralized Famalicão’s central defenders, who lack a left foot, and disrupted connections with midfielders, particularly Gustavo Sá. This made the first half challenging for his side.

Despite the difficulties, Famalicão created chances, including a shot by Zabiri that hit the post. Oliveira expressed that the team “lacked some peace” in their approach.

He framed the defeat as a “step” in the growth of his very young squad, emphasizing that facing such competitive challenges is crucial for their development.

Oliveira specifically praised several young players, including Zabiri, Ba, and Pedro Bondo, stating they made the club “extremely proud.” He highlighted Zabiri as an excellent choice by the scouting department.

Zabiri, who played for the U-23 team last year and scored goals, is now earning a consistent place in the senior squad. He also participated in the U-20 World Cup, a testament to his individual effort, according to the coach.
