Jorge Fonseca’s judo career has reached a turning point. After a stellar run between 2019 and 2021, which saw him win two world championships, a European title, and an Olympic bronze, the pressure was mounting. Now, national coach Pedro Soares is urging a more relaxed approach.
The coach recently withdrew Fonseca from competition, citing a need to adjust expectations. “He was always expected to win a medal,” Soares said. “Now, we’re lowering the pressure and taking some weight off his shoulders.”
Fonseca’s recent performances have been mixed. He finished fifth at the Paris Grand Slam, a decent result, but was knocked out early at the 2024 Olympics. Soares was pleased to see Fonseca training hard in Hungary and is confident he’ll bounce back.
New Challenges Ahead
Fonseca will compete at the European Judo Championships in Podgorica, Montenegro, alongside three other Portuguese athletes: Miguel Gago (-66 kg), Otari Kvantidze (-73 kg), and João Fernando (-81 kg). The event runs from July 23 to July 26.
Soares is managing expectations for Fonseca’s return to the tatami. He’s not promising medals but is backing his athlete to perform well. The focus is on a fresh start, rather than past glories.
Portugal’s judo team is looking to make an impact at the European Championships. With a mix of experienced and younger athletes, they’re ready to give it their all.
