Imagine a game that blends the nostalgic feel of classic Final Fantasy with the intense action of Sekiro. That’s what the team at Sandfall Interactive is aiming for with their upcoming game, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
In an interview with GamesRadar+, François Meurisse, producer and co-founder of Sandfall Interactive, revealed that the game’s director, Guillaume Broche, is a huge fan of JRPGs and wants to recreate the magic of classic Final Fantasy games like 7, 8, 9, and 10.

For example, think of a scenario where you’re exploring a dark forest, and suddenly, a monster jumps out at you. In Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, you’ll need to time your defense perfectly, just like in Sekiro, to take down the enemy. This mechanic is inspired by the parry system in Sekiro, which adds a layer of complexity to the gameplay.
The game also draws inspiration from Slay the Spire, a popular roguelike deckbuilder. However, the art team wants to create a unique visual style that doesn’t simply mimic Japanese games. As Meurisse put it, “Guillaume wants to create a game that captures the feeling of classic RPGs, but with a modern twist.”

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is set to release on April 24th for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series. With its unique blend of classic RPG elements and modern gameplay mechanics, it’s definitely a game to watch out for. As Meurisse said, “We want to create a game that feels like a classic RPG, but with a fresh perspective.”
