Creating Games That Resonate
Game development is all about crafting something you love. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a prime example.
In a YouTube interview with Pirate Software, Guillaume Broche, head of Sandfall Interactive, shared his thoughts. The big question: what advice does he have for new game developers?
Broche said he’s been lucky. His personal taste happened to align with what people enjoy. He emphasized the importance of creating games you’d play yourself.
Make Games You Love
Don’t try to please others, Broche advised. Focus on what you’d want to play. If you don’t like something, don’t include it.

Broche thought their game would appeal to a niche audience. But he believes it reflects honest, genuine, and fun feelings. Successful indie games often have a sincere and unique feel.
Looking at games like Balatro or Vampire Survival, they all have distinct characteristics and have done well. This echoes Broche’s point. Successful games in the past five years have all had their own style.
Broche’s luck might come from having a great team and a game style that resonates with many people. This combination led to Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s huge success.
Even now, Broche can’t believe what he’s achieved.
