Ciccone launches the glasses to the public for the first time in 2023

Giulio Ciccone has long had a ‘registered trademark’ when it comes to celebrating victories (he has eight): throw the glasses to the public before crossing the finish lineeither winning alone or in a small group, as happened this Saturday in the second stage of the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana, his first success of the year for the Italian Trek, the only team that came out to compete this Thursday in the race with five riders, fewer than anyone. Ciccone (28 years old) was the strongest after the screening that took place in Alto de Pinos, the last of the seven ports that were part of the profile of the day (one of them in the 1st category). The demanding route was, as expected, too tough for Eritrean Girmay, who wore the leader’s yellow after his victory on the opening day. After Ciccone crossed the finish line Tao Geoghan Hart and Pello Bilbao, with his teammate Landa in fourth position.

There was a five-rider breakaway with Italians Samuele Zoccarato (Green Project-Bardiani CSF) and Alessandro de Marchi (Jayco-AlUla), Canadian Benjamin Perry (Human Powered Health) and Javier Romo (Astana-Qazaqstan). A fifth member, the Ethiopian Hailemichael (Caja Rural), he got off the hook by not being able to keep up with his fellow escapees. The last two to resist were the veteran De Marchi and the Spanish Romo, coming from the triathlon and who this year aspires to make a leap in the Kazakh team. His adventure ended five kilometers from the finish line. It was then that possibly the two most powerful teams in this Volta, Bahrain and Ineos, they began to dynamite the group based on rhythm. Castroviejo’s work is noteworthy, one more day, which caused numerous cuts.

In the final two kilometres, when the terrain became steeper, the American McNulty, from UAE, he tried it, making it clear that the consequences of the falls in Mallorca were behind him, but he was caught. Then, in the reduced group and already within the final kilometer, Mikel Landa jumped with a movement that precipitated the rest of the attacks. The strongest was that of Ciccone, who had no answer and was able to win sufficiently. Pello was locked in by Tao, but was able to finish third and moves up to second overall. The birthday boy Carlos Rodríguez (22 years old) entered six seconds, in tenth place after nine from the head. This Friday, the third stage with 145 km between Bétera and Sagunto with two ports (one of 1st) and with the last 30 km downhill.
