Chuck Norris, the international martial arts champion who parlayed his physical prowess into a decades-long career as a global action film and television star, died Thursday following a medical emergency in Kauai, Hawaii. He was 86.
The Norris family confirmed his death in an Instagram statement released Friday, noting that the actor suffered a sudden passing but was “surrounded by his family and was at peace.” The news marks the end of an era for the entertainment industry, where Norris defined a specific brand of stoic, hard-hitting American heroism.
Born in Ryan, Oklahoma, in 1940, Norris served in the United States Air Force before rising to prominence as a competitive fighter. He became a six-time undefeated World Professional Middleweight Karate champion and established his own American hard style of karate, Chun Kuk Do, alongside the United Fighting Arts Federation.
His transition to cinema was initiated by his friend and fellow martial artist Bruce Lee, who cast Norris in the 1972 martial arts classic “The Way of the Dragon.” That breakout role catalyzed a prolific run of high-octane films throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Norris anchored successful titles including the 1983 neo-Western “Lone Wolf McQuade,” the 1985 thriller “Invasion USA,” and the 1986 action film “The Delta Force.”
As the theatrical action genre evolved, Norris shifted his focus to television, dominating the 1990s broadcast ratings with the CBS crime series “Walker, Texas Ranger.” The show ran from 1993 to 2001 and introduced him to a new generation of viewers. It was also during the production of this series in 1997 that he met his wife, Gena Norris, who had a minor role on the program.
Norris remained active and engaged with his fanbase until his final days. On March 10, celebrating his 86th birthday, he posted a video of himself sparring with a trainer, accompanying the footage with the caption, “I don’t age. I level up.” His final major cinematic appearance occurred in the 2012 ensemble action film “The Expendables 2.”
Beyond his screen career, Norris was deeply involved in conservative politics, notably campaigning for Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee in 2008 and maintaining ties with international figures, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who previously referred to him as a close personal friend. Norris is survived by his wife, five children, and 13 grandchildren.
