The new Chrome versions 116.0.5845.179/180 for Windows and 116.0.5845.179 for macOS and Linux from September 5th fix four vulnerabilities in the Google browser. Attacks in which one of these vulnerabilities would be exploited are not yet known. A week ago, Google released a security update for Chrome 116.
In the Chrome Release Blog, Daniel Yip lists the four vulnerabilities patched in Chrome, all of which were discovered by external security researchers and reported to Google. Google classifies these vulnerabilities as high risk. It is a colorful mixture of different vulnerabilities in several browser components. The almost obligatory type confusion in the Javascript engine V8 is also back. Google has not yet announced the level of rewards for discoverers (“TBD”: to be determined).

As a rule, Chrome updates itself automatically when a new version is available. With the ⋮ menu entry » Help » About Google Chrome you can trigger the update check manually. Google also released Chrome for Android 116.0.5845.172 as well as Chrome for iOS 116.0.5845.177. On September 6th, that is tonight, Google Chrome 117 wants to deliver to the first users, in a week to all interested parties.

The manufacturers of other Chromium-based browsers are now being asked to follow suit with updates. Despite the fact that some Chromium versions are quite different, everyone is currently on the same security level – the one from the last week of August.
