Chinese premier to visit France next week

Chinese Premier Li Qiang will visit Germany and France from June 18 to 23, Beijing announced Thursday. This will be his first trip abroad since taking office in March, in this less political post than the president and more specifically responsible for economic and financial issues. He “will pay an official visit to Germany, where he will hold the seventh round of Sino-German government consultations, and an official visit to France, where he will attend the Summit for a New Global Financial Pact,” said Wang Wenbin, a spokesperson. word of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The objective of the Summit for a New Global Financial Pact, organized on the initiative of French President Emmanuel Macron, is ambitious: to reform the architecture of global finance to better respond to the challenges of global warming. Several participants have already confirmed their presence: Ajay Banga, President of the World Bank, Antonio Guterres, Secretary General of the United Nations, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

Tense relations with Germany

Li Qiang’s trip to Germany promises to be more eventful, after Berlin published a document this week that describes China as a force hostile to Germany. China, although “partner” of Germany, acts “against our interests and values”, deplored the government of Olaf Scholz in its National Security Strategy unveiled on Wednesday.

Germany’s leading economic partner and a vital market for its powerful automotive sector, China has long been spared by Berlin, which has however hardened its tone for more than a year. The environmental ministers advocate greater firmness towards Beijing, pointing to its attitude towards the island of Taiwan and the abuses of which the Chinese authorities are accused against the Uyghurs in the Xinjiang region (northwest), as part of their anti-terrorist campaign .
