Chinese Court Sentences Former High-Ranking Political Advisor to Death

A former top Chinese politician, Han Yong, has been sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve. He’s 68 years old.

Han used to be the chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference in Shaanxi province. He took over 261 million yuan, or about 1.1 billion Thai baht, in bribes over 30 years.

The Intermediate People’s Court of Nanning in Guangxi gave the sentence. Han will lose his political rights for life. He must also give back all the money and goods he got illegally.

Han helped people and companies in business, project allocation, and personnel appointments. He did this in Jilin, Xinjiang, and Shaanxi provinces. He got money and gifts in return.

Han confessed and cooperated with investigators. He also gave back the ill-gotten gains. This is why he didn’t get a direct death sentence.

What Happened

Han was investigated and kicked out of the Communist Party in April 2024. He was charged in August of the same year.

The court said Han’s actions were serious, but he showed remorse. He also helped the investigation and returned the bribes. This reduced his sentence.
