Chinese Ambassador Hails Thai Royal China Visit as 50-Year Friendship Milestone

Bangkok’s royal palace announced a state visit by Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn and Queen Suthida to China in November 2025, a trip Chinese officials are touting as a pivotal moment in bilateral ties.

The visit, scheduled for November 13-17, 2025, marks the first by a Thai monarch in 50 years. It will coincide with the golden jubilee of diplomatic relations between the two Asian nations.

Chinese Ambassador to Thailand, Zhang Jianwei, emphasized the trip’s historical significance in an article, describing it as a “milestone” in the half-century relationship. He noted it is King Vajiralongkorn’s first official visit to a major global power, signaling Thailand’s deep commitment to strengthening its bond with Beijing.

The ambassador highlighted the consistent role of the Thai Royal Family in fostering these ties since diplomatic relations were established in 1975. Former King Bhumibol Adulyadej regularly met with Chinese leaders, including Deng Xiaoping, Jiang Zemin, and Hu Jintao.

Deng Xiaoping, then China’s Vice Premier, visited Thailand in 1978 and notably attended the ordination ceremony of the then Crown Prince, King Vajiralongkorn, underscoring the high importance placed on the relationship by both nations’ top leaders.

Queen Sirikit made an official visit to China in 2000 for the 25th anniversary of diplomatic ties. King Vajiralongkorn, during his time as Crown Prince, visited China four times between 1987 and 1998, exploring multiple provinces and meeting various Chinese leaders.

Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn has visited China over 50 times and was awarded the Friendship Medal by President Xi Jinping, recognized as a goodwill ambassador. Princess Chulabhorn Walailak has also contributed to scientific and technological cooperation and performed the guzheng in China.

This strong royal engagement, Ambassador Zhang stated, has fostered strategic trust and people-to-people connections.

Political leadership has also driven the partnership. In 2011, then-Vice President Xi Jinping visited Thailand. In 2012, both countries formalized their bond as a Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership.

President Xi sent congratulatory messages to King Vajiralongkorn upon his ascension in 2016 and coronation in 2019, expressing a desire to deepen relations. Xi Jinping also made a historic visit to Thailand in 2022, where he was welcomed by King Vajiralongkorn and Queen Suthida.

The leaders have aimed to elevate the relationship to a “community with a shared future” for greater stability, prosperity, and sustainability.

Ahead of the 50th anniversary, the King and Queen have participated in significant events since 2024, including a China-Thailand ice hockey competition and the procession of a Buddha’s tooth relic from Beijing’s Lingguang Temple to Thailand.

King Vajiralongkorn conveyed congratulations to President Xi Jinping in October for the 76th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China, expressing Thailand’s readiness for closer cooperation.

President Xi recently told Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul that China and Thailand share a family-like bond as good neighbors, friends, relatives, and partners. He urged both nations to build on past achievements to deepen their “community with a shared future,” advance mutual modernization, and contribute to regional peace, stability, and prosperity.

The Chinese government and its people anticipate the royal visit, expecting it to produce fruitful outcomes for the “community with a shared future.” The upcoming trip is set to open a new chapter, propelling China-Thailand relations into an even more prosperous next 50 years.
