China is racing against the US to lead the charge in AI robotics. The Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence just launched RoboBrain 2.0, an open-source AI model that acts as a robot’s brain. It can understand distance, plan tasks, and work more like humans.
This new model is called the “most powerful open-source model in the world for robots.” Robots using it can judge distances with spatial intelligence that’s 74% more accurate. This means they can pick up objects or park with ease. They’re also 17% faster at planning tasks and can break down complex jobs into smaller steps.
The Beijing Academy is working with over 20 top companies in the robotics industry to push robots into real-world use – at home, in factories, or in hospitals. They think partnerships are key to progress. At their conference, over 300 AI and industry experts from around the world showed up, including Chinese tech giants Baidu, Huawei, and Tencent. These companies want to develop and invest in AI systems for robots.
Another player, the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Centre, made headlines when its prototype robot, Tien Kung, finished a marathon in Beijing. They aim to create a platform that’s like an “Android for robots,” where every company can develop and connect in the same standard.
This is a big step for China in pushing the humanoid robot industry beyond its old limits. They’re tackling problems like model efficiency and data quality, which are still lacking worldwide.
