Chile Imposes Curfew Amid Nationwide Blackout Affecting 99% of Country

The Chilean Government has declared a state of exception and a curfew from 10 PM local time due to the mass blackout that affects nearly the entire country, leaving almost two million citizens without access to electricity. This blanket blackout has impacted the entire country, from the Arica and Parinacota region in the north to the Los Lagos region in the south. Initially, the government has ruled out the possibility of an attack, focusing instead on efforts to recover the electricity supply as quickly as possible.

Extent of the Blackout and Government Response

The director of the electrical coordinator, Ernesto Huber, has emphasized that while the authorities are working fervently to restore power, it’s currently unclear when the service will be fully reinstated. President Gabriel Boric is closely monitoring the situation, according to local reports. An emergency meeting of the National Committee for Disaster Risk Management (Cogrid) has been convened to assess the situation, which has caused significant chaos on the roads due to non-operational traffic lights and has virtually brought the capital, Santiago, to a standstill.

The National Electric Coordinator, responsible for the operation of the electrical system spanning over 3,100 km, promptly notified the relevant authorities, triggering the activation of the service recovery plan. The causes of this extensive supply cut are to be investigated and analyzed according to the standard protocol for such contingencies, with the incident reported to the relevant authority. The Presidency also reported that President Boric is at the Carabineros de Chile operational center, overseeing the emergency response.

Speculation and Investigation

Just before the special session to analyze the causes was announced by the Interior Ministry, speculation included possible connections to forest fires or even sabotage. The meeting, aimed at determining the root cause of the blackout, is attended by the majority of cabinet ministers, including those from the interior, energy, health, public works, and environment, along with representatives from the joint staff, carabineros, firefighters, and the Investigation Police.

Impact on Daily Life

In Santiago, the immediate effects of the blackout have been pronounced, with banks, shops, and shopping centers closing early and significant road chaos resulting from inoperable traffic lights and the cessation of suburban subway services. The national electrical coordinator plays a crucial role in ensuring the safe operation of the electrical system at the minimum cost and with open access, spanning from the northern region of Arica to the southern archipelago of Chiloé.

As the situation continues to unfold, the government’s priority remains the swift restoration of electricity to affected areas and determining the cause of the blackout to prevent future occurrences. The involvement of high-level government officials and emergency services underscores the seriousness with which the situation is being addressed, aiming to minimize disruption to the public and restore normalcy as soon as possible.
