Chelsea have qualified for the final of the Carabao Cup at the expense of Tottenham Hotspur, the second English cup tournament also known as the League Cup. After last week’s 2-0 home win, Chelsea were 1-0 too strong to visit the Spurs.
The opponent in the final comes from the match between Liverpool and Arsenal.
Hakim Ziyech still got a base place at Chelsea in the first game; this time he started on the couch. He came in half an hour before time. Steven Bergwijn, who is high on the wish list at Ajax after the departure of David Neres, was not on the match sheet at all. The Tottenham forward is on his way back from injury.
Tension quickly gone
Within twenty minutes the tension in North London seemed to be over. Antonio Rüdiger brought Chelsea home on roses by scoring the 1-0 from a corner. Tottenham goalkeeper Gollini went under the ball, after which Rüdiger tried to head. That didn’t really work either, but the ball went into the goal through his back.
Before halftime, it seemed that Tottenham could hope for a miracle again via a penalty kick, but after viewing the images, the referee saw that Rüdiger had made his violation just outside the box.
In the second half, referee André Marriner pointed to the spot again after a sliding by Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, but after intervention by the VAR he had to reverse his decision again.
Tottenham, led by former Chelsea coach Antonio Conte, pushed hard afterwards. Harry Kane seemed to reward the hard work with a hit, but that didn’t count either: the British captain was just offside.
The match was halted just before time due to a medical emergency in the stands. The fate of Tottenham, which had to score three more goals after the interruption in the eight minutes of injury time, was already sealed.
Other semifinals postponed
Chelsea have to wait more than a week before the opponent in the final is known. The first game between Liverpool and Arsenal was moved last week due to a “rapidly growing number of corona cases” at Liverpool. The first game is scheduled for Thursday, the return is on January 20 in London.
The final is scheduled for February 27.
