Exceeding All Expectations
Nandu Jubany’s second venture into the Dakar rally was nothing short of phenomenal. This time, he opted to participate in a two-wheel drive MD buggy, a vehicle considered less powerful compared to its four-wheel drive counterparts. Despite this apparent disadvantage and his inexperience in navigating the treacherous terrain, Jubany managed to secure an impressive 19th place among all the cars and an outstanding second position in the T1.2 category. This remarkable achievement left everyone in awe, especially considering Jubany’s humble approach to the competition.
When questioned about his secret to success, Jubany explained that consistency was key. Alongside Marc Solá, his co-pilot, they made sure to pace themselves and avoid major mishaps, which ultimately proved to be a winning strategy. Admittedly, the duo did face some setbacks, including losing time on a couple of days due to mechanical issues and getting lost in uncharted territories. Nevertheless, Jubany and Solá persevered, staying focused on their objective of crossing the finish line.
Avoiding the Pitfalls
It’s not uncommon for Dakar participants to experience a “croquette” – a colloquial term for a rollover in the sand. However, Jubany was determined to complete the rally without a single incident of this nature. Although he came perilously close to having an accident, which he referred to as “a guardian angel saving us from the batter,” Jubany’s skill and caution enabled him to avoid any major incidents.
Despite the grueling nature of the Dakar rally, Jubany found time to indulge in his culinary passion. By preparing traditional Spanish dishes like paella and tortilla for the Spanish delegation, he aimed to express his gratitude to all the people who supported him throughout his journey. Jubany’s appreciation for their efforts only strengthened his resolve to keep pushing forward.
Looking to the future, Jubany is adamant about repeating his success in the Dakar rally. The idea of securing a top 20 spot and making the podium has only invigorated his determination. In fact, he is already planning to compete in two or three more Dakar events, bolstered by his recent accomplishments and his family’s encouragement.
