Charlie Kirk Shot Critically at Utah Valley University Event, Suspect Held

The political world was shaken to its core Wednesday, September 10, when conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was shot during a live event. The shocking incident happened at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. Kirk, just 31 years old, was rushed to a local hospital. A police official later told The Associated Press that he was in "critical condition."

The scene unfolded as Kirk participated in a question and answer session with students. He was reportedly shot in the neck. Images from the event quickly spread across social media, showing the sudden chaos. The university swiftly issued an alert, stating: "A single shot was fired on campus at a visiting speaker. Police are now investigating; the suspect is in custody." Authorities confirmed to The Associated Press that a suspect is indeed being held.

The event where Kirk was speaking was put on by Turning Point USA, an organization he co-founded back in 2012. Aubrey Laitsch, the Public Relations Manager for Turning Point USA, quickly released a statement. "This is a developing situation," Laitsch said. "We can confirm that Charlie Kirk has been shot. He is in the hospital and we are praying for him at this time." Details on Kirk’s condition beyond "critical" were not immediately known. CNN later reported that the shot came from a campus building, about 200 meters away from where Kirk was on stage.

Former U.S. Representative Jason Chaffetz, who is 58 and represented Utah as a Republican from 2009 to 2017, was there to witness the terrifying moment. He shared his account with Fox News during a phone interview right after the shooting. Chaffetz described a lively scene: "There were many people there," he explained. "He came out, was throwing hats, cheering on the crowd."

Chaffetz recalled the moments before the gunfire. Kirk had just answered a "religious question." Then, he was asked about "transgender shootings" and "mass murders." "When that happened, when that question came up, and he was about to answer, a shot," Chaffetz recounted. He added, "I was watching Charlie. I can’t say I saw blood. I can’t say I saw him get hit, but I did see him fall immediately backward to his left." The sudden noise sent everyone into a panic. "As soon as the shot was heard, everyone hit the floor and started scattering, screaming and yelling, as you can imagine," Chaffetz continued. "And I went from focusing on Charlie Kirk to making sure our daughter and son-in-law were okay."

The news quickly reached national figures. President Donald Trump, 79, used his Truth Social platform to share his concern. "We must all pray for Charlie Kirk, who has been shot," Trump wrote. He praised Kirk, calling him "A great man through and through. God bless him!" The incident remains under investigation, as the community grapples with the unexpected violence that shattered a college event.
