Charlie Hunnam’s Evolution: From Teen Discovery to Sons of Anarchy Stardom, Netflix’s Ed Gein

Charlie Hunnam has recently made a commanding return to widespread public attention, embodying notorious serial killer Ed Gein in the third season of Netflix’s Monsters. The series premiered in October, showcasing Hunnam in one of his most challenging roles to date. This prominent turn highlights a career marked by significant growth and a deep sense of self-awareness.

His journey in acting began somewhat by chance in the late 1990s. Hunnam was discovered during a Christmas Eve outing in his hometown of Newcastle upon Tyne. He recounted to Variety in a recent interview that he was "dancing" in a store while trying on sneakers, a gift for his brother. It was then that Elizabeth Binns, the production manager for the British series Byker Grove, noticed him.

“So I blew her a kiss, being the cheeky young lad I was,” Hunnam explained. That bold gesture led to his first acting role in Byker Grove.

Before taking on the iconic role of Jax Teller in Sons of Anarchy, Hunnam appeared in various projects, including Queer as Folk, Undeclared, and Green Street Hooligans. His portrayal of the motorcycle club president in Sons of Anarchy, a role he held from 2008 to 2014, solidified his status as a leading man.

Yet, Hunnam freely admits to a steep learning curve during his early tenure on the acclaimed drama. “I looked at those early episodes and felt like I just didn’t know what I was doing. I didn’t have very developed skill sets,” he shared with Variety in a separate cover interview. This frank assessment underscores his commitment to his craft.

He added, “I feel very proud of Seasons 6 and 7, like my work finally got to the place of my aspiration.” This statement reflects a profound evolution in his acting, demonstrating a dedicated pursuit of excellence that continues to define his career. His latest role as Ed Gein further cements this trajectory, reminding audiences of his range and dedication.
