Charles Oliveira, a dethroned king

Charles Oliveira returns to the cage after his heavy loss to Islam Makhachev. He lost the belt on the scale before his match with Justin Gaethje, but he felt like the champion. The Russian submitted him in the second round and was proclaimed lightweight champion in October of last year. The Brazilian is back, and he will do so against Iranian Beneil Dariush in the co-main event of UFC 289 at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, Canada, early Saturday to Sunday.

The Brazilian became the UFC lightweight champion by defeating Michael Chandler by second-round KO in May 2021. He lost his belt on the scale before the fight with Justin Gaethje a year later. In his next lawsuit with Islam Makhachev, the disciple of Khabib Nurmagomedov, Oliveira felt like a champion and assured that he would be one more defense. The Russian was the favorite and he showed it in the cage. He submitted the king of submissions in the second round with an arm triangle. He took the fight to the ground, to the Brazilian’s ground, and beat him there.

Charles Oliveira is the fighter with the most finishes and submissions in UFC history. He had a difficult life in Brazil, they lived in the favela, his family was very poor. The Iranian, fourth in the ranking, comes from beating the Polish Mateusz Gamrot by unanimous decision on the same evening as Oliveira’s defeat. He has a streak of eight straight wins, and arrives with the intention of beating the number one in the division. The fight will accompany the stellar fight between Amanda Nunes and Irene Aldana for the bantamweight title.
